County Journal Whiskey Creek salutes Southern Rock legends
Claude Flowers - Puget Sounds Whiskey Creek 9 p.m. at the Detour Tavern 221 Main Ave S Renton 226-0908 Tickets $5.00 21 & Over Lynyrd Skynyrd just played the Gorge last Friday and probably won't return to our area until next year. However fans won't have to wait long to hear the veteran groups music. Local Skynyrd tribute band Whiskey Creek headlines tonight at the Detour Tavern. Drummer Terry Allen, guitarists Jeff Davis and Randy Henderson, bass guitarist Daymon Berg and keyboardist Bob Baker manage to faithfully recreate the Skynyrd sound. Although anyone would be hard pressed to sing like the late Ronnie Vanzant, vocalist Darenn Whichers (formerly of Ash Groove) does a fine job of sounding looking and even moving like his hero, a cowboy hat on his head and a microphone stand in his hands. During the course of its two plus hour set, Whiskey creek plays all of Skynyrd's hits from the 1970s (including "That Smell", "Sweet Home Alabama", "Gimme Back My Bullets" and the Immortal "Freebird") plus songs the group has recorded in recent years. All told, the band offers a classy homage of Southern Rock's favorite sons. Good stuff. |
